Where Science Meets the Sacred: Dr. Elizabeth Ssemanda on Holistic Psychiatry, Medical Intuition, and Healing the Whole Person

She knew in kindergarten.
Not a passing fancy, not a childhood phase. When someone asked little Elizabeth Ssemanda what she wanted to be, the answer arrived with what she describes as "a strong conviction behind it." A doctor. That was all. That was everything.
Decades later, after a Bill Gates Millennium Scholarship, a PhD from Johns Hopkins completed in three years, a medical degree from Brown, and a psychiatry residency at the University of Michigan, Dr. Elizabeth Ssemanda is exactly that. And she is quietly, persistently, courageously becoming something more: a bridge between the precision of evidence-based medicine and the wisdom of the soul.
The Air She Breathed
Elizabeth grew up as the daughter of Ugandan refugees, raised primarily by her mother in a household where, as she puts it, education was everything. The immigrant work ethic became part of the air she breathed. She was working as a certified nursing assistant at the age of 14, doing research internships between 15-18 in Bethesda, earning scholarships, and blazing trails.
When she arrived at Brown as a Black woman from an immigrant family, she was already carrying more than most of her peers. And she carried it with grace, with focus, and with the quiet inner fire of someone who had always known, on a soul level, exactly why she was there.
Psychiatry drew her because of the depth of human connection it offered. "You get to know people," she says, "in ways their own spouses sometimes do not." And when the healing happens, when someone truly shifts, she watches it ripple outward into every corner of their life. That ripple effect was what she had always been looking for.
The Bandage and the Root
But something began to trouble her beneath the surface of her impressive credentials.
Modern psychiatry, she discovered, too often amounted to medication management. Treating symptoms rather than causes. Placing, as she describes it, a bandage over things rather than getting to the root. And root cause healing in mental health was precisely what had drawn her to the field in the first place.
Her patients were asking questions the traditional medical model could not fully answer. She began exploring other healing modalities, other systems, other ways of understanding what it means to be human and to suffer and to heal. And then, at a mind, body, spirit event in Austin in 2021,* a stranger walked up to her out of nowhere and told her she was a medium.
She had no idea who he was. It completely threw her.
Something Had Already Been Opening
What the stranger in Austin named was something Elizabeth had already been quietly developing. She had taken an intuition training course with Jeffrey Allen and had been practicing what he taught. On her most attuned days in the ER, she noticed that the energy of the entire space shifted. "Everyone had a better day," she says simply. "That was not a coincidence."
At the same Austin event, Jimi Merk* chose to read her in front of the group. He said things about her that no one could have known. And from that moment, as she describes it, she felt placed on a path.
Today she runs two complementary practices. One focused on psychiatry, medication management, and therapy. The other, a coaching practice where she works as a holistic healer and soul guide, bringing medical intuition, energy healing, and soul to soul connection into her work with clients. Her knowledge does not disappear in either room.
Her intuition does not disappear in either room. She is, as she says with quiet clarity, "going to be me regardless of the setting."
Lightworkers Inside the System
A powerful moment in this conversation comes when Elizabeth speaks about the role of Lightworkers planted inside medical systems.
"Some of the brightest lights I know," she says, "are planted right inside it." And what they do, even within those structures, is create mirrors. They invite people to question. They hold space for something deeper to emerge.
But she is equally clear about what must come first for every Lightworker who wants to serve others: inner work. "Deal with your own material first," she says. "Feel your feelings. Because when you do that, you will have that much more energy and clarity to be the most effective version of yourself."
The healing radiates outward. To families, to communities, eventually to the culture itself. But it begins, always, from the inside.
Her everyday spark is as simple and as powerful as everything else about her. Every morning, before anything else, she tells herself: "Something wonderful is going to happen today." And something wonderful, she says, usually does. Every single day.
That is not magical thinking. That is a holistic psychiatrist who has spent a lifetime understanding how the mind shapes reality, choosing deliberately to shape hers toward light.
She is a trailblazer. And the path she is walking, honoring both the data and the divine, has the potential to change medicine worldwide.
