What if everything you have been taught about success is built on the wrong foundation?
Not wrong in a dramatic, tear-it-all-down way. Wrong in a quieter, more insidious way. The kind of wrong that keeps highly intelligent, deeply motivated people burning out year after year, doing more and more, and feeling less and less like themselves.
Peter Matthies has spent the better part of two decades helping people see that distinction. As the founder of the Conscious Business Institute (CBI), author of Plan Be, former venture capitalist, and member of the Evolutionary Leaders, he has brought the conversation about consciousness and authentic success into the boardrooms of Starbucks, BMW, Siemens, and Intel. More than 80,000 professionals have gone through CBI's programs. And it all started with a psychic in Carmel who saw his soul for three hours.
The Long Way Back to Himself
Peter grew up in Germany in a loving household shaped by laissez-faire Christian values and conventional ambitions. Study engineering. Get ahead. Do more. He followed the breadcrumbs dutifully, lost his authenticity somewhere along the way, and, despite his outward success, spent years feeling like he was swimming against a current, which seemed to navigate with ease.
His spiritual awakening came not through a single dramatic moment but through a trail of breadcrumbs of a different kind. A book called Grandfather by Tom Brown Jr., the story of an Apache elder who walked the Americas for 65 years in deep communion with the earth, blew his mind open and introduced him to Native American spirituality. A move to California. A growing dissatisfaction with the existing way to work. And then Rob.
Rob was a psychic in Carmel, California whom Peter and his then-wife met on their research journey for alternative ways to live and succeed. The first session lasted three hours. Rob spoke about Peter's parents, his siblings, his marriage, his frustrations, his gifts, all without being told a single thing. He didn't see Peter the person. He saw Peter's soul.
"There is a resonance that happens in that moment," Peter says, "and that feeling of being seen gives us an enormous amount of power."
Rob told him he was here to be a lighthouse, a teacher, someone who sees what isn't working and helps transform it. He told him he wasn't broken or behind. He was simply here to do something different. And that permission, coming from someone who had seen him completely, was the pivot point for everything that followed.
Being Versus Doing
On a plane from New York in 2005, the name Conscious Business Institute arrived in Peter's awareness with complete clarity. At a time when the phrase “conscious business” was not in circulation, he knew without doubt that this was his mission.
What CBI teaches, at its core, is simple, yet profound: there are not conscious businesses. There are conscious individuals inside organizations. And the shift from unconscious to conscious begins not with strategy or structure but with the “being model” rather than the “doing model.”
Most people, Peter points out with directness, are still running the doing model. We work harder, accumulate more credentials, more recognition, more impact, more money, and hope to become somebody or something: a doctor, a respected person, a millionaire. It is constant striving. And it’s burning us out.
The being model asks a different question entirely: who are you here to be on a soul level? When you reconnect to that soul level, authentically, and allow your gifts to flow from that place rather than from striving, something shifts. The current stops working against you. Life begins to feel less like effort and more like flow. You’re operating from abundance, not scarcity.
Every Lighthouse Stands Alone. None Stands Without the Others.
One of the most powerful images in this conversation is Peter's lighthouse metaphor for the Lightworker path.
Lighthouses, he observes, are not meant to stand together. When you see two on the same shoreline, it doesn't make sense. Each is here to occupy its own unique place and cast its own distinctive light. That is what it means to live from authentic self in business and in life: to stand fully in your own spot, not in anyone else's shadow, not dimming yourself to fit a smaller world.
And yet, he is equally clear that the lighthouses need each other. Not to merge, not to crowd the same shore, but to know that the others are out there, that the light is held collectively even when the fog is thick.
This is precisely what Global Lightworkers United is built for. Not a mountaintop where like-minded people confirm what they already believe, but a network of individual lighthouses, each standing strong in their own place, each made brighter by knowing the others are lit.
We are, Peter says, in the cocoon phase of the butterfly. The “goo phase,” as he calls it with a smile. The old structures are dissolving and the new ones are not yet visible. This is the time to do the inner work, to stand in sovereignty, and to trust the transformation that is already underway.
His everyday spark is as grounding as it is permission-giving: an afternoon coffee on the deck, doing absolutely nothing. No agenda. No striving. Just the presence of nature, the passing of thoughts, and the quiet reconnection to the abundance that is always there when we stop long enough to feel it.
Be first. Then do.
That is the whole teaching. And it turns out it is enough to change everything.
